I hope you all have an enjoyable summer. Be sure to limit how much time your child spends watching TV, playing video games and being on the computer. Encourage your child to get outside and play games or find a quiet corner and curl up with a good book. When your child is online the webpage of sites that I use in class can be found here. Be sure to check out some of our projects listed there as well.

I hear more and more students talking about their Facebook accounts at the elementary schools. I even had a third grader try and "Friend" me last year. Did you know that children must be 13 to have an account? So, elementary students should not be on Facebook. However, if you are allowing your child to have an account or you have older children it is very important that you set it up with your child and keep the following information in mind:

Set it up with the strongest security settings

Know your child's password.

Be sure that you're on Facebook as well and that you and your child are Friends.

Check your child's Facebook account on a regular basis and make sure they are Friending only people they know in real life.

Bullying used to be a problem on the bus or playground. Now it's a problem online. Be sure that your child and his/her friends are acting in appropriate ways.

You may want to hide your posts so your child doesn't see what you're saying on line.

Be sure to communicate with your child about how keeping him/her safe is an important job as a parent and that you watching over his/her account is way you are doing your job.

For the next three months the kindergarten through third grades will be participating in the Winter Wonderland Wiki Project. This is a project that was started last year by Mrs. Coggin, a technology teacher in Mobile Alabama, Mrs. Sedwick, a technology teacher in California and myself. It was a successful project so we are repeating it this year with just a few changes. You can see the project
here . Click on each grade level and then my name to see our pages. The first graders will be participating in a Holiday Card Exchange. They drew a Christmas or winter picture in TuxPaint and then I put them all together using Mosaic from Bighugelab.com. The children are signing their first names to the card and then we'll be sending them off to schools across the US and Canada. We'll be keeping track of where the cards go using Google Maps. We'll zoom in and take a look around the communities. Below you can see our cards:

Here's a quick run down of what's been happening in the lab during October and November.

Most of the students can log on to the computers with the aid of their card. A few students can even log on without their cards!! I'm going to begin an incentive program soon and give out pencils or stickers to those that can log on without a card. The students log on with their username-first initial and last name and their password is their 4 digit lunch number. Once the students are logged on we've been using the Curious George site which the children love. I like it because it reinforces basic skills and as children answer questions correctly the activity automatically gets more difficult to challenge the children. The students are also learning how to get logged onto Education City. Education City is a subscription site and is a fun and interactive way to practice math, language arts and science skills.

It took us quite awhile to complete our Kidspiration project but we did it! The children learned how to insert pictures and link them to the main idea two different ways. They also learned how to change the link colors and search for a specific picture. Our next project was reviewing basic shapes and following directions to draw a turkey in TuxPaint. The children also learned how to use some specfic tools in TuxPaint. The pictures turned out cute. I put them into a slide show using the website Animoto.

After the initial day of reviewing lab procedures and reviewing smart health habits each grade level is working on something different. Here's a brief run down of what's happening in the lab.

Kdg:The students are learning how to log on to the computers. Their login name is their first initial and whole last name. Their password is the same as their 4 digit lunch number. Each child is given a card that looks similar to our login screen with the correct name and password filled in on it. I have a tough love class. If you want on the computer you have to fill in the information yourself. Of course I give assistance and encouragement but I don't do it for anyone. Once the children get on they get to free explore in a drawing program called Tux Paint. It's an easy program to learn independently while I assist others. If you have a kindergartner and a computer at home it would be helpful if you could have your child practice typing their login name on the computer.

1st Grade: We listened to the story Swing, Swing, Swingin Wiggleworks on the interactive white board. Now we are working in Kidspiration3 and making a graphic organizer of what animals we'd like to have swing with us.

The children are learning how to:

add their names to a document

save and open a document

add bubbles to an organizer

change bubbles to a picture

change words in the main idea bubble

2nd Grade:Second Graders are learning how to use the drawing program Tux Paint. They are writing a sentence about fall and then drawing a picture to go along with their sentence. Once we are finished I will be posting them online.

3rd Grade:Third graders are learning how to use some of the the icons in the Microsoft products. They are also learning about other shortcuts such as the ctrl+c to copy as well as right clicking for shortcuts. They will be writing a quiz for the 4th and 5th graders about these shortcuts. While writing the quiz they'll be using some of those icons they have learned.

4th Grade:Fourth graders are answering the question "What did you do over the summer?" in a fun way. They are learning how to add a placemarker to a Google Map and writing about their summer on the map. Once everyone is done and has had a chance to edit their work I'll be sharing the map with you.

5th Grade:Last year we learned about Internet safety. This year the 5th graders are writing comics in which the characters tell about an Internet safety rule. Student that follow all the directions will have their comics posted on a bulletin board in October and online once we have them saved as jpegs. Students that didn't follow all the directions the first time will be given a second chance to fix any problems.

It seems strange to think that I have six first days of school! The first day in the lab is usually disappointing for the younger students. They are eager to get on those computers but it doesn't happen on the first day. The first day we go over rules and procedures. Here is a link to the presentation I'll be showing the students. We'll be having a discussion as we go through it. Part of the presentation is a cute movie showing the proper way to sneeze. After the presentation we'll also be watching a video regarding hand washing on Brainpop Jr. The older students will watch it on their own and take a quiz at the completion. The younger students will watch it on the interactive white board as a whole group and work together to complete the quiz. I'll also try and squeeze in time to take everyone's picture. I use the student's pictures for my seating charts. My old mind is not so great at remembering eveyone's names so the seating charts help. I'm going to try letting the older students do the self portrait picture. That should be fun!

It's hard to believe I'm beginning my third year in the computer lab. Each year I do things differently and always with the hope of improving instruction and student involvement. One of my changes this year is this webpage. I've taken many of the links offline and am basically starting over. My focus for this site is parents. I'm going to try hard to keep you up to date with what's happening in the lab. I'll be sharing links to sites on internet safety and links to class projects. This is a blog so that means you can leave me comments! I welcome suggestions and feedback. If you need to contact me regarding your child please use the contact form or email me directly at nisenberg@hpschools.com
