Toileting and Diapering Procedures (Preschool - Grades 12)
The Holland Patent Central School District is committed to ensuring that all Preschool–Grade 12 students have safe, timely, and dignified access to toileting facilities. The District will implement uniform toileting and diapering procedures consistent with New York State Education Department (NYSED) regulations and Board of Regents guidance.
No student shall be suspended, excluded from school, or denied participation in educational programs because of toileting needs. Staff will respond to toileting accidents with dignity, sensitivity, and without punishment or embarrassment. Students with disabilities requiring toileting assistance will receive supports and services as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.
Facilities and Equipment
Each school building shall provide accessible restroom facilities for students. A designated private toileting/changing area will be available in each Health Office. Equipment will be cleaned and disinfected between uses and maintained in safe working order.
Supplies
Each building will maintain essential toileting and diapering supplies, including disposable gloves, wipes, disposable bags, cleaning and disinfecting products, soap, and paper towels. Parents or guardians are responsible for providing diapers or pull-ups and a change of clothing.
Staff Responsibilities
Toileting assistance may be provided by teachers, teaching assistants, aides, and/or school nurses, with two adults available when appropriate. Staff will follow hygiene protocols, maintain student privacy and dignity, document concerns when necessary, and communicate with families as appropriate.
Procedures
Staff will follow standardized procedures by: gathering necessary supplies, performing hand hygiene and wearing gloves, escorting the student to a designated private area, providing the level of assistance required, cleaning and changing the student, disposing of soiled materials according to district protocols, sanitizing the area, ensuring handwashing for both staff and student, and returning the student to class promptly.
Privacy and Dignity
Student privacy will be protected at all times. Families will be included in planning and communication regarding ongoing toileting needs.
Training
Relevant personnel, including teacher aides, teaching assistants, teachers, and school nurses, will receive annual training on universal precautions, hygiene, toileting procedures, maintaining student dignity, and district protocols.
