Physical and Occupational Therapy In the School Setting

If a child needs PT and/or OT within the school setting, as determined by standardized testing. The PT and/or OT, combined with the child’s educational team, decides what type of service is needed.

If a child receives occupational or physical therapy in the school setting, the following areas can be addressed by an OT and PT within the school environment:

 

Occupational Therapy Services:

  • Visual perception, visual motor, sensory, perceptual motor, cognition, fine motor, eye hand coordination etc. as they relate to educational progress.
  • Need for specialized equipment or adaptations to assure progress in educational environment.
  • Helps acquire the skills to perform the activities of daily life in the school environment.

 

Physical Therapy Services:

  • Gross motor skills as they relate to educational progress (balance, stair climbing, ambulation, sitting balance, etc.)
  • Ability to progress in physical education safely and effectively.
  • Safe functional mobility skills in school and on the playground.
  • Need for specialized equipment or adaptation to assure progress in educational environment.
