U.S. Navy Band Inspires Young Musicians

The U.S. Navy Band from Washington, D.C., didn’t just drop anchor at Holland Patent — they made waves. The nationally renowned ensemble presented a clinic for the Holland Patent High School Wind Ensemble and the Remsen High School Band at Holland Patent Middle School on Feb. 26. 

Navy Band musicians shared their musical expertise and worked with students on their concert band music. They offered guidance, shared personal stories, answered questions, and created an atmosphere that was both inspiring and welcoming. 

“The Navy Band was a lot of fun. I learned how to play at a higher level and how to play with more confidence. I learned how the band feels playing on the stage, and I learned how to keep your composure when dealing with playing on stage,” said Joseph McChesney, senior student and member of the Wind Ensemble and the varsity soccer and basketball teams at Holland Patent. 

In the evening, several Holland Patent students were welcomed on stage to perform a piece of music with the Navy Band at the Capitol Theater in Rome.  

“I especially loved the community’s reaction when it was announced that our students would be joining the band for a number — there was an audible sense of surprise and appreciation from the audience. It was a powerful and affirming moment for our young musicians. I hope they will carry these memorable experiences with them for a long time,” said Kristin Hahn, Holland Patent band director.
