With Paws and Purpose, Seventh and Eighth Graders Support Local Animal Shelter

Holland Patent seventh and eighth grade students made a “pawsitive” impact by raising money to give adoptable pets a better chance at finding their forever homes.

Students in Mrs. Surace’s classes worked on a project for Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society, creating drawings of adoptable animals and persuasive essays to encourage adoptions. The project also included a basket raffle that took place on November 14 at Agway in Holland Patent, where they raised $3,143.05 to benefit the humane society.

The raffle featured themed baskets for pet lovers, food enthusiasts and home decorators. Tickets were sold throughout the evening until the basket pull at 7 p.m. Food and snacks were available, with all proceeds going directly to the humane society to help cover adoption costs and provide care, shelter and services for animals in need.

“I am so proud of my students for their hard work and generosity,” Mrs. Surace said. “Together, they showed that even small acts can make a big difference for animals in need.”

The fundraiser brought families and community members together for a night of fun while supporting a cause that helps animals find a loving home.

This initiative reflects Holland Patent Central School District’s commitment to building community connections by encouraging students to engage in service projects that strengthen ties between classrooms and local organizations.
