Music Teachers Engage in Inspiring Professional Development at MCMEA Conference
Holland Patent music teachers attended the Madison County Music Educators Association (MCMEA) Conference Day during the Superintendent’s Conference Day on October 11.
Mr. China, Mr. DePalma, Mrs. Gutowski, Ms. Kelly, Mr. Navarro and Mrs. Swift joined 200 other music educators from throughout central New York for an energizing day of professional development and music-making. Keynote speaker Brian Balmages shared a message of artistry and education – emphasizing the need to select music for performances that is educational and develops musicianship. Balmages, a noted composer and conductor, has had his music performed around the world, as well as by Holland Patent’s bands and orchestras.
Vocal teachers participated in several sessions with prolific choral composer, arranger and educator Andy Beck. Beck reminded teachers that their students of all levels can sing meaningful music and have fun while doing it. Additional presenters from around New York State shared useful information on instrument repair, rehearsal techniques for all levels and ensuring accessibility for all students in music. The teachers came away with ideas to implement into their teaching to enrich students’ music curriculum experiences throughout their educational journey.
