Totally Stressed Out

Dear Jitters,

I have signed up for a lot of after school activities, but now I can't even do my homework, and I don't want to quit any of them. What do I do?

Dear Totally Stressed Out,

Scheduling issues are perhaps the peskiest aspect of middle school. While it's incredible to be offered so many extra academic, recreational, and athletic opportunities, we are constantly faced with the age-old question: “If I join everything, will I be able to get anything done?” Truth be told, no definitive answer exists. Some people our age are more than capable of balancing it all, finding themselves content with a full schedule and workload. The rest of us, however, need to fully evaluate our priorities before even considering  joining an after school activity. In your predicament, I'd recommend doing just that, even if it seems too late (good news: it's not!). I'm glad that you seem to be enjoying all of the extra curricular activities you've joined, but homework is an incredibly important part of your education that should be one of your top priorities. If getting your homework done means quitting an activity, I hate to say it, but that might be best. It'd almost definitely behoove you to speak with our guidance council about creating a schedule for yourself that does not cause any stress or prevent you from completing schoolwork.

I wish you the best of luck in your decisions!

Signed,

Jitters
