    “Middle school students are characterized by rapid physical growth, curiosity about their world and an emerging self-identity. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, counselors work as a team member with school staff, parents and the community to create a caring, supportive climate and atmosphere whereby young adolescents can achieve academic success. Middle school counselors enhance the learning process and promote academic achievement. School counseling programs are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate career goals and realize full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community.” American School Counselor Association, 2008.

     School Counselors at the middle school level partake in many different roles.
     
    STUDENT SERVICES: middle school counselors help students in the transition from child to adolescent. Through group work, individual counseling, crisis intervention, and guidance lessons; they help to educate and refine student’s social skills and emotional education. They help students learn how to effectively compromise, communicate, and live with adults; connect students to community resources and activities; promote developmental growth for all students; provide career counseling, personal/social counseling, and academic counseling.
     
    SUPPORT SERVICES: middle school counselors are not only an extra support system for students but for adults as well. We act as liaisons between guardians, teachers, students, administration, and community members; helping to spread information and promote communication amongst these groups.
     
    Middle School Counselors are a part of the overall education system in that they compose a preventative comprehensive guidance and school counseling curriculum. Such preventative measures teach and promote acceptance and a safe learning environment for all students.
